Rhett was born with Down syndrome and a heart defect, requiring intensive care and open-heart surgery at just 6 months old. Thanks to generous donors, he continued treatment at the Down Syndrome Clinic — a vital support for his family. At 4, Rhett was diagnosed with leukemia, but with personalized treatment shaped by groundbreaking research, dedicated care teams and therapies that brought him joy, he persevered. Today, Rhett is strong and vibrant, thriving in school, making his classmates laugh, and sharing his tender heart with everyone he meets.

Austin and Caden

Austin and Caden are twins who were each born with a rare congenital heart defect. At only 2 weeks old, the boys had their first surgeries — on back-to-back days. At 2 years old, they had back-to-back surgeries again, replacing implants that were unable to grow with them. Medical advances helped treatments as they grew, replacing some surgeries with less invasive procedures. Now teenagers, they’ve had five open-heart surgeries and two catheterization procedures between them. Both are doing well, love football and are developing their own interests and hobbies.

Naomi

Naomi was 2 years old when her parents learned she had cancer. During her long and difficult treatment, Naomi battled life-threatening infections, lost her hearing and was also diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive loss of muscle control. Her care team at Children’s Wisconsin became part of her family, fighting for Naomi, cheering her on and helping her family find joy again. Today, Naomi is learning sign language, developing her mobility using a specially designed toy vehicle, and exploring her growing independence on exciting family trips.
